ONCE it was just lipsticks, powder and perfume but now the Avon lady could be calling to sell you car insurance as well.
The make-up firm says it is planning to add 20,000 new recruits to its army of door-to-door sales staff – and they may soon be offering life insurance and credit cards, as well as motor cover.
The firm, which already has 160,000 UK agents – mostly women – made an pounds 18.6million profit last year from sales of pounds 278m.
It is second only to Boots for cosmetics sales, but Avon UK president Jerry McDonald claims his firm is a “sleeping giant” and wants to widen its scope. He said that the firm is negotiating with potential partners and hoped to start trials of the new, diverse approach early next year.
Women often enjoy lower car and life insurance premiums than men, because they are safer behind the wheel and live longer. Yet many financial service providers find it difficult to tap into this market.
